'Now don't get started' is the sort of comment the hostess (yes, it's mostly women, in my experience who are afriad of an arument breaking out) will make while passing the cheese and crackers.<br />I say it's unfortunate that these arguments are pre-empted because how can issues that people honestly differ on get aired and discussed if even families are afraid of an ugly exchange occurring. I think friends and family need to be able to air differences even at the risk of awkwardness or bruised feelings, rather than leave it to 'professionals' who have incentives to emphasize and dramatize issues that divide us. People who know and love each other have incentives to find common ground, and hear what the other person is saying. chrisnoreply@blogger.com
